Torah Study: 9:30 am, Sat. Oct 20

Lech Lecha / לך־לך

Genesis 12:1 – 17:27

(triennial portion 16:1 – 17:27)

Genesis continues with the action-packed reading of Lech Lecha, commonly translated as “Go Forth”. Avram and Sarai hit the road. Avram goes to war to rescue his nephew Lot. Avram and Hagar (Sarai’s maid-servant) have a baby, Ishmael. Sarai gets cranky, Hagar gets fired. It’s not quite a fairy-tale ending, but eventually blessings come around to all.

Everyone is welcome to join these fine discussions – No homework required!

Torah Study meets for approximately 90 minutes every Saturday beginning at 9:30 at the Havurah building on the Westside Hwy. Before meeting together, group members may each week’s portion in advance. If you don’t have time, that’s okay, since we frequently read at some of the text together. The Jewish Publication Society (JPS) provides a free online audio version of the weekly reading, along with a pdf download of the printed text, so you can read along as you listen.

Discussion is informal and respectful of our tradition. The portion is usually discussed in the context of contemporary, historical, spiritual, political and cultural themes; how it informs religious practice and Jewish values; and how the Torah relates to our lives today. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Interested individuals can join in the reading/discussion at any point of the year. There is no reservation or RSVP required – simply show up!

If you are unsure which Torah section will be read any week, consult the bottom of our Torah study page reading cycle here.
