Resistance Productions (Chaim and Trudy Rosemarin) will present a staged reading of “It Can’t Happen Here” as a fundraiser for the Havurah on Fri Feb 16th at the Vashon High School Theatre. (This performance is also the Havurah Third Friday* event for February.) The play, adapted from Sinclair Lewis’s novel 1939 novel of the same title, is about a charismatic power-hungry politician who becomes president on a populist platform, promising to restore the country to prosperity. He portrays himself as a champion of traditional American values.
Director Chaim Rosemarin said he remembered Lewis’s novel during the presidential campaign due to the stunning parallels between Trump’s rhetoric and that of Buzz Winthrop, who energizes his populist, nativist, ultra nationalist-base by blaming imigrants, welfare recipients, the liberal press, Jews for the decline of the United States.
If you can’t attend, Resistance Productions still needs seed money to defray the costs of bringing this event to our community. After costs, all proceeds benefit the Havurah. Consider contributing to this timely and important fundraiser now on our website .
*The Havurah endeavors to offer an event on the Third Friday of each month, in addition to the Second Friday Potlucks. In January it was “Dinner and a Movie.” Please volunteer ideas and venues for Third Fridays by replying to this newsletter.
